It's one of the best-placed hotels in the city — the Royal Mile, Princes Street, and the castle are all close enough to reach on foot, and the location alone gives the whole stay a sense of occasion before you've done anything else.

Service That Reads Like It Was Built for Royalty

The Balmoral doesn't just respond to what you need. It anticipates it. We were running late for dinner, the kind of late that usually means an apologetic phone call and a rescheduled table. The valet called us a cab — and then called the restaurant himself to let them know we were behind schedule. Nobody asked him to. That's the kind of instinct you'd expect from staff trained to take care of someone far more important than us, and it's what made the whole stay feel less like a hotel visit and more like being looked after.

Tea at Palm Court: As Beautiful As It Is Good

Afternoon tea at Palm Court is its own kind of royal treatment. It's the rare spread that photographs as well as it eats — tiered stands, precise presentation, the whole ritual — but none of it is for show. Yes - I did ask for extra sandwiches - they were delicious!

Spacious, comfortable, with the same Scottish character running through the whole property — Hebridean blues, heather hues, art on the walls that actually belongs there instead of feeling like decor. It's the kind of room that lets you spread out after a full day of walking the city rather than living out of a suitcase in a corner. Since I work on the road, I always appreciate a real desk ... bonus if there's a great view!
