Liberty Trust in downtown Roanoke is where history and modern comfort coexist in a way that quietly shifts your pace.
My stay was brief. Just one night. Long enough to get a feel for the place, but not long enough to explore it the way I wanted to. It’s the kind of hotel that makes you wish your calendar had left more room.
A Building With Stories
When you walk into Liberty Trust, you enter a piece of Roanoke’s history. The seven-story building opened in 1910 as the First National Bank, Roanoke’s first financial institution. Designed in a French Renaissance style, it features towering columns, bronze doors, and a granite exterior that still feels grounded and intentional.
Now a Virginia Historic Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building has been carefully transformed into a boutique hotel that preserves its architectural integrity. The original details aren’t hidden. They’re part of the experience.
Rooms That Balance Heritage and Comfort
Liberty Trust has 54 guest rooms, mine was a spacious corner window room that had a large well-appointed bathroom. From Petite Queen rooms to larger King options, the spaces are thoughtfully laid out with modern conveniences.
If I had stayed longer, the room would have made it easy. It’s the kind of space that works equally well for unwinding or easing into the morning without rushing. And for all of us digital nomads, it was set-up to get some hours in on the laptop.
The Vault At Liberty Trust
One of the most memorable parts of the property is The Vault at Liberty Trust, a restaurant and bar created from the building’s original bank vault. It doesn’t feel gimmicky. It feels earned. Heavy doors, preserved details, and a warm atmosphere make it a natural place to end the day.
Even on a short stay, it stood out as a space where you’d want to linger.
A Walkable Stay That Invites Exploration
One morning, I walked straight from the hotel to a nearby farmers' market—no car, no planning, just stepping outside and going. That’s one of Liberty Trust’s quiet strengths. Downtown Roanoke feels accessible, human-scale, and easy to explore on foot.
Had I stayed another night, I would’ve kept walking—coffee shops, local restaurants, and galleries all within reach, with the Blue Ridge Mountains close enough to tempt you beyond the city.
A Thoughtful Touch for Four-Legged Travelers
Liberty Trust is also dog-friendly, and it shows. Instead of simply allowing pets, the hotel sets up treats in the room for your four-legged travel companion. It’s a small gesture, but it signals care and intention—something the property does well across the board.

Even in one night, Liberty Trust leaves an impression. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back—not because it demands attention, but because it gives you space.
