Cozy Countryside

Straight out of an imaginary Jane Austin novel is the Talbot Malton Hotel — where old-world charm meets contemporary luxury in the picturesque town of Malton in the North York Moors.

Hotel: Imagine a less-stuffy Soho House atmosphere — elegant and stylish, without a hint of snobbery. While the rooms have been tastefully remodeled, some are not as upscale or elegant as others, they are still thoughtful and beautiful. Set up shop in the stylish downstairs bar or next to the living room fireplaces, where you’ll most likely find friendly, respectful guests. It should be noted that dogs are very welcome for a £20/night fee, with dog-friendly paths nearby.

Food: The hotel restaurant is outstanding. My favorite, the cheddar soufflé, was a standout amongst other culinary gems, and everything I sampled was noteworthy. Additionally, the separate living room/parlor with two large fireplaces is an ideal space to unwind and grab a port wine. For a traditional afternoon tea, be sure to make a reservation, or for a more casual option, stroll down the stairs to the cozy, stylish bar to unwind.

Area: While I found York and the hotel to be completely sufficient, Malton itself is quaint and offers fun events throughout the year. Check out the local options for tours, classes, and food options, mere steps from the hotel. Walking Malton and the nearby countryside is effortless and the most obvious choice, but historic York is truly a must. Easily accessible by train, check out the Britrail Pass for an economical travel option if you’re not already a UK citizen. York is roughly 30 minutes away, while London is 3-4 hours, depending on the time of day. Make reservations at peak times/seasons.

For a blend of historic charm with contemporary comfort, be sure to check out this beautiful countryside getaway.

KATIE’S MUSTS:

-Enjoy a meal at the hotel. The food is fantastic, and the staff is exceptionally friendly.

-Spend the day wandering York. The cobblestone streets are filled with history, and the stone wall is completely unique to the town. Christmas time has markets and mulled wine, for that extra “Je ne sais quoi"!

-Visit in autumn for the fireplace experience. This hotel feels like it was meant for a cozy getaway.
